The core premise of pediatric guidelines produced in various nations was consistent: time was the variable that mattered, and lowering it was the intervention. However, the thresholds were set at slightly different points. The hour-counting system was not designed to handle the complication brought forth by the GUSTO Birth Cohort Study, which is based on longitudinal data gathered throughout Singapore since 2009.
Growing Up in Singapore Towards Healthy Outcomes, or GUSTO, started monitoring children before they were born. Mothers were enrolled during pregnancy, and the ensuing children were tracked through infancy, early childhood, school entry, and adolescence. In contrast to behavioral surveys and parental questionnaires, the study’s use of neuroimaging—including MRI and EEG scans at various stages of development—provided researchers with a biological map of what was happening within children’s brains as their screen time increased. This suggests that the brain’s sensitivity to digital media is not limited to early life. When youngsters are concurrently handling the pressures of formal education for the first time, it reappears at another stage of considerable cerebral restructuring.
Perhaps the most surprising discovery is the neutral gap between those two windows, ages two and three, where the GUSTO data revealed no statistically significant relationship between screen use and subsequent cognitive outcomes. The researchers are cautious not to imply that screens are safe for children of that age. However, it does make matters more complicated for public health guidelines that are predicated on the idea that the first five years are a uniformly high-risk period that calls for uniformly severe limits. That seems to be less specific than the developmental story.

In practical terms, the conclusion that most merits attention is the protective role of parental reading. According to the study’s findings, children whose parents regularly read books to them beginning at age three experienced a considerable reduction in the detrimental neurological effects linked to early screen exposure, and in certain cases, a reversal of those effects. That is not a small discovery. It implies that human interaction—the particular kind of prolonged, low-stimulation, back-and-forth engagement that shared reading with a young child entails—is the intervention most likely to protect against the quantifiable harms of early digital exposure. Reading the GUSTO results gives me the impression that the most significant factor in this discussion has been there all along, just waiting for the study to catch up to what it really does.
