Put your hands over your face. Take a moment. Watch what happens to the infant in front of you when you move them aside and say “boo.” The sequence, which takes about four seconds and only requires your hands and your face, is doing something in that child’s brain that no screen can replicate and that developmental neuroscientists have been studying for decades. It is the anticipation before you reveal your face, the rush of excitement when you do, and the instant desire to do it again.

Peekaboo is a serious game. It’s one of the best examples of how human brains grow through contact rather than observation and why this distinction is more important in infancy than at any other stage of life. The cognitive function of object permanence, the emotional function of co-regulation, and the social function of serve-and-return are all delivered in a concentrated manner in what appears to be a straightforward instance of parental foolishness.

Throughout infancy, object permanence—the knowledge that a person or thing exists even when it is hidden from view—develops gradually, usually between the ages of four and twelve months. It’s not natural. Babies must learn it through experience. The baby’s brain keeps track of what happened to the parent’s face when they disappear and then resurface. What happened to it? Is it returning? When it comes back, there’s an emotional satisfaction as well as a neurological confirmation that things exist even when I can’t see them. The pattern is detected by the brain. It files it. The file turns into a circuit after several cycles.

The back-and-forth interactions between caregivers and infants that construct the architecture of social and emotional brain development are described by developmental researchers using the serve-and-return concept. A baby makes a gesture, a sound, or a face. The caregiver reacts by making eye contact, smiling, speaking, or touching. The infant reacts once again. Every interaction creates a loop that eventually supports language, emotional control, and the ability to maintain relationships. Serve-and-return is one of the most crucial procedures in early brain development, according to the Harvard Center on the Developing Child. Peekaboo is a serve-and-return game with an especially fulfilling structure: the phase of anticipation, the revelation, the joy, and the request for recurrence.

It’s important to fully comprehend the contrast with screen exposure. Infants are shown content on screens without asking for anything in return. The baby observes. Whether the baby grins, looks away, makes a sound, or nods off, the screen keeps playing. No loop exists. Because there is simply serve—a constant flow of visual and aural stimulus that the child passively absorbs—there is no serve-and-return. A partner who reacts to serve-and-return is necessary for the development of brain circuits. That partner is not a screen. This is even worse by fast-paced content, which trains attention toward abrupt changes rather than fostering the kind of sustained concentration and anticipatory patience that a game like peekaboo cultivates over repeated cycles.

The third component, co-regulation, can be the most undervalued. Babies rely on caretakers to assist them regain composure when they are upset since they lack the ability to control their own emotional states on their own. Peekaboo’s regular cycle of hiding, creating tension, disclosing, and relieving is an organized way to control emotions and anticipation. Through repeated experience, the youngster learns that the mounting sense of “where did they go” will always end pleasantly, that the tension resolves into delight, and that disappearance is followed by return. This is the precursor to what will eventually become self-soothing, and it arises from precisely this kind of responsive, structured engagement with a real person.
