When a parent reaches for a tablet, a certain kind of mayhem ensues. A child’s eyes are glazed over, totally engrossed, and perfectly motionless for a split second. The next: yelling, sobbing, and occasionally hurling objects. To be honest, it appears to be a total personality swap.
Parents have placed the blame on themselves. The child has been held accountable. Bluey has been subtly blamed by some. However, an increasing amount of knowledge about brain chemistry is pointing in a completely different direction: to a neurological response that is documented, predictable, and, in a peculiar way, entirely reasonable.
Child development educators and researchers refer to this as the “techno-tantrum.” Furthermore, it has more to do with biology than behavior.
Dopamine, a neurotransmitter linked to reward, motivation, and pleasure, floods the brain when a child engages with a tablet, game, or short-form video app. With a great deal of precision, modern apps are made to maintain dopamine levels. The brain never reaches a natural stopping point due to unpredictable rewards, never-ending novelty, the next level, and the next clip. It simply continues, lingering in a state of chemical euphoria that seems perfectly normal to a child’s immature nervous system.

The screen then vanishes. Dopamine levels also quickly decline. Techno-tantrums, according to digital parenting and wellbeing researcher Dr. Kristy Goodwin, are a “typical neurobiological response to using technology” rather than an indication of addiction or a lack of self-control. The difference is important. When a child is having a meltdown, they are not making a decision.
Their prefrontal cortex, which is in charge of reasoning, impulse control, and emotional regulation, has virtually shut down. The amygdala, the area of the brain responsible for fear and threat reactions, is left in charge. Neurologically, removing the screen is perceived as a threat. Thus, the child reacts loudly, physically, and without much thought, just like threatened brains do.
It’s worth taking a moment to consider that. It’s not manipulation on the part of the screaming child on the floor. They are actually withdrawing.

During a podcast appearance, parenting author Maggie Dent made this point very clear when a mother called and described her toddler’s post-iPad behavior as something from a horror movie. Dent remained unflinching.
She gave it a name right away. “That’s called the ‘Techno Tantrum,'” she explained, adding that smaller screens are designed to captivate kids in ways that larger, more passive screens, like televisions, just aren’t. She proposed that there is a measurable difference in the dopamine response. The neurological intensity of screen time varies.
Researchers are still figuring out a layer of complexity added by a 2024 study that was published in JAMA Pediatrics. Tablet use in toddlers was associated with higher levels of anger and frustration in the months that followed, according to a two-year survey of over 300 families. However, the data also revealed the opposite: children who were already prone to emotional outbursts were more likely to use tablets more frequently in the future. It’s a loop, and its exact beginning is unknown. Maybe in both directions simultaneously.
According to that research, the transition off the screen is just as important as the amount of time spent on it, and child development experts seem to concur. The very neurochemical crash that results in the meltdown is often forced when a device is taken abruptly. Instead, dopamine levels can decline more gradually without the system shock if children are given concrete, action-based cues, such as “finish this round” instead of “five more minutes,” and a mid-stimulation activity is used to bridge the gap.
Perhaps part of the issue is the way we have framed the techno-tantrum. When parents treat it as a failure in discipline, they respond with punishment, lectures, and frustrated ultimatums that fail to address the real issue. Logic cannot reach the brain at that moment. Calm, time, and a more gradual transition can help you get there.
All of this does not imply that unrestricted screen time is safe or that parents’ concerns are unfounded. Dr. Goodwin takes care to emphasize that the true danger isn’t screen time per se, but rather whether it starts to take the place of the most important things—sleep, exercise, play in the real world, and interpersonal relationships. A child who receives all of those things after watching television for an hour is in a different situation than one who does not.
However, the actual meltdown? That is not proof of a failing parent or a broken child. It’s proof that the brain is acting precisely as it was trained to do by a dopamine-rich environment. which is, in some respects, the more practical information.
