The goal of the GUSTO study was not to render a decision regarding iPads. More than 1,200 children were chosen from Singapore’s public hospitals starting in 2009, and the study’s goal was to track them throughout their early years, gathering information on everything from sleep and nutrition to brain activity and cognitive development. After years of measurement and analysis, it finally discovered a pattern that researchers are now describing with unusual directness for an academic setting: prolonged exposure to screens in very early childhood is linked to quantifiable changes in brain development, and those changes manifest in standardized test scores years later.

According to the research, the two most crucial ages are 1 and 6. When compared to infants who watched far less, a one-year-old who spent more than four hours a day in front of a screen displayed clear changes in EEG data, which measure brain electrical activity. The visual processing networks and cognitive control-related regions showed the disparities. These are not minute differences on the verge of statistical significance. They represent shifts in the maturation trajectory of brain networks during a time when that trajectory is being established.

Age 6 is significant for a different reason. It roughly coincides with the start of school, when cognitive demands rise and the abilities acquired throughout the early years of life are subject to formal evaluation. According to the GUSTO research, children who were exposed to a lot of screens at this age also demonstrated connections with poorer working memory and slower decision-making. The developmental arc of the primary school years seems to be influenced by the alterations in the brain that were discovered during infancy. Researchers are still trying to figure out whether one is directly affecting the other or if both represent a shared third variable, but the link is consistent enough throughout the dataset to be considered seriously.

It’s important to be clear about the meaning of the math scores finding, which is the one that frequently appears in the study’s coverage. There is no direct neurobiological connection between screen use and poor math performance in kids. It’s because mathematical reasoning is supported by the cognitive abilities most closely linked to early intensive screen exposure, such as decreased working memory, slower cognitive flexibility, and impaired attention management. A child who finds it difficult to retain numerous bits of knowledge at once or who takes longer to absorb new information will eventually struggle with math. The discovery of screen time comes after the discovery of brain growth, which comes after the discovery of cognitive capacity.

The data includes a protective factor that is just as important as the risk. Active parental involvement, particularly reading aloud to young children, regularly shows up as a significant protective factor against the detrimental developmental correlations. In isolation, this discovery isn’t shocking, but in the context of GUSTO, it’s noteworthy since it seems strong enough to partially counteract the impacts of screen time. During infancy and early childhood, parents who routinely read to their children appeared to offer a sort of developmental counterbalance. It makes sense since collaborative reading necessitates language processing, emotional engagement, attention, and back-and-forth interaction—exactly the kinds of relational and cognitive experiences that passive screen time mostly avoids.

In a setting where long-term developmental research was simply lacking, a generation of parents has been choosing screens for their young children. GUSTO is part of a growing corpus of research that is starting to shrink that gap by pinpointing the precise ages and exposure levels where the data indicates caution, as well as the particular parental behaviors that seem to matter most, rather than by categorically denouncing screens. The WHO’s recommendations that children under the age of two should not use screens were released in part as a precaution.
